About Us

5-1-7 Youth Cheerleading is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and growing junior high and middle school competitive cheer across Michigan. We provide a structured league where teams compete with one another, creating meaningful opportunities for athletes to perform, learn, and grow in a team-based environment.

We operate as an entity that enables teams—rather than individual participants—to compete in MHSAA Junior High/Middle School Competitive Cheer and spring USA Cheer STUNT, expanding access and opportunities for athletes to participate in organized, team-based competition.

Our league is designed for 3rd through 6th-grade athletes as an introduction to Michigan Competitive Cheer and STUNT using modified MHSAA-based rules to ensure a safe, age-appropriate, and development-focused experience.

History

This league was started in the fall of 2014 as a way to increase participation in youth cheer and to combat losing youth athletes to all-star gyms. This was a small endeavor at first, getting a few local teams in the Jackson area to compete with 3rd-6th graders. It was not until 2018 that the league began to grow, and other schools from different counties started to see the value in this opportunity. In 2019, discussions started about creating a board, and in 2020, the first 517 Youth Competitive Cheer Board was formed. In 2024, this league is seeing unprecedented growth and currently has over 30 member schools! We look forward to the growth this league will see in the years to come.

Philosophical Standards

The point of this league is to introduce and prepare our junior athletes for the sport of Michigan Competitive Cheer.  We have modified the middle school rules of MHSAA competitive cheer to fit the safety and developmental needs of our young athletes.  This league is a learning environment for our young athletes and is in no way meant to be overly competitive.  We compete for learning and growth and to develop the athletes of the future for our Middle School and High School Programs.
